'The Hills' alternate ending: Creator Adam DiVello talks [SPOILER]'s return, possible reunion -- EXCLUSIVE

[SPOILER ALERT IF YOU HAVEN'T WATCHED THE ALTERNATE SERIES FINALE ENDING OF THE HILLS THAT MTV AIRED THIS MORNING]

MTV has been re-airing its glossy reality soap The Hills this summer, and today, they re-aired the series finale … but with a twist. The network debuted an alternate ending for the show, a spin-off of their similar hit Laguna Beach, which featured the return of — gasp! — star Lauren Conrad. The previous ending had Brody waving goodbye to on-again, off-again girlfriend Kristen and then the camera pulling back to reveal they were actually shooting on a backlot — a nod to rumors of the series being staged. In this new edition, Brody returns to his apartment where Conrad, who left the show in season 4, is sitting on his couch. When Brody says that he was saying goodbye to an old friend, Conrad cheekily responds, “It’s hard to say goodbye,” and then lets out a huge grin.

EW exclusively chatted with series creator Adam DiVello about this surprise ending, how it all came together, why it was scrapped, and the potential for a Hills reunion movie.

'The Hills': MTV to air alternate ending to series finale -- EXCLUSIVE

It’s been about three years since viewers said goodbye to MTV’s groundbreaking reality hit The Hills. In the series finale, Kristin Cavallari (who had replaced previous star Lauren Conrad at that point), seemed to drive away from her on-again, off-again boyfriend Brody Jenner and into a new, camera-less future. But then it was revealed that Brody and Kristen were actually shooting all of this on a backlot, a play by the producers on rumors that The Hills wasn’t real.

But fans may get an even more satisfying resolution this summer: EW can exclusively reveal that MTV will air a different, alternate ending to The Hills on Friday, August 9, at 11:30 a.m. ET. It’s all part of the return of “RetroMTVBrunch,” which beginning July 8 at 9 a.m. ET and will feature encore presentations of both Laguna Beach and The Hills. Then, starting July 10, the marathons will air from 8 a.m. ET till noon ET. In between the airings, castmembers from MTV’s Girl Code and Awkward. will be providing commentary on the classic reality soaps. See an example below:
