Mariah Carey, Nicki Minaj officially exit 'American Idol' -- UPDATE

It’s official: Mariah Carey won’t return for a second season as a judge on American Idol. UPDATE May 30, 8:27 p.m. ET: Nicki Minaj has also confirmed she’s leaving her judge’s chair.

A joint statement from Fox and producers of the singing competition show FremantleMedia and 19 Entertainment declared, “Mariah Carey is a true global icon – one of the most accomplished artists on the planet – and we feel extremely fortunate  that she was able to bring her wisdom and experience to the American Idol contestants this season. All about Eve: Would the rapper make a good 'American Idol' judge?

Amidst rumors of a shake-up on the American Idol judging panel, we’ve tried to brainstorm potential great performers who could breathe new life into the show. EW’s resident American Idol expert Annie Barrett stressed in her analysis that any good judge has to tell it like it is and not be a mouthpiece for producers. So after hearing Eve talk candidly with Soledad O’Brien Tuesday night at the XX Project Salon Session, we couldn’t help but wonder if the rapper/songwriter would make a good judge for the competition.

'American Idol' announces new way to vote: SuperVote

This is…a slightly new way to vote on American Idol.

SuperVote is an online tool for fans to cast 50 votes all at once via any of the AT&T American Idol Vote destinations: AmericanIdol.com, the mobile app, and Facebook, Fox announced today. Fans will be able to send all 50 votes to one contestant, or allocate them among a few different performers.

This follows a 2011 announcement that allowed fans to vote online. As always, viewers will still be able to vote via a phone call after the show, but now it seems like passionate fans won’t have to spend as much time texting massive amounts of votes to keep their favorite in the game. The new system will kick off tomorrow night, when the 10 girl semifinalists – including Breanna Steer and Janelle Arthur  – take the stage.

We can’t wait to see Nicki Minaj’s reaction to the news.

InsideTV Podcast: Is Mariah Carey the most boring 'American Idol' judge...ever?

Other than a possibly manufactured feud with Nicki Minaj that she appears to want no part of, has Mariah Carey added anything to the American Idol judging panel? Considering all the vocal expertise at her disposal, we hoped she’d have some legitimate constructive criticism to share with this year’s auditioning contestants. Instead, she merely smiles, says yes or no in as boring a manner as possible, and then goes back to praying that her fellow female judge does not light into her again. Mariah’s yawn-worthy entrance onto the American Idol stage is just one of the first impressions Jessica Shaw and I will be breaking down on this week’s edition of the InsideTV Podcast.

Also up for discussion on the new season of Idol: Is Randy the only judge actually willing to criticize? How are we feeling about the steady stream of inspirational sob stories being shoved down our throats? And does Keith Urban deserve better than being forced to play peacemaker between the two feuding divas? Also, who are our early favorites among the contestants? Click on the audio player icon to hear our thoughts and see if you agree. (The American Idol discussion beings at 24:00.)

But first, it’s time to get busy with one of our TV favorites — Busy Philipps! That’s right, the Cougar Town star calls in to talk about the comedy’s big move to TBS, her boobs getting a lot bigger (due to her pregnancy, natch), and what’s in store for her character coming up. She also shares some memories from her Freaks and Geeks days and plays a few kick-ass rounds of Jessica’s new game — 7 Degrees of Busy Philipps. READ FULL STORY

'American Idol': New featurette offers boobs, clown costumes, and one tender Mariah Carey/Nicki Minaj moment -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Screen Shot 2013-01-15 at 2.04.44 AM

Granted, Mariah probably only looks so giddy here because a sassy male contestant has just told Nicki, “Shut yo mouth.” (Hidden gem: Randy Jackson’s hand, conjuring up this television magic.) Below, we’ve got an exclusive featurette to get you ready for American Idol‘s season 12 premiere this Wednesday and Thursday on Fox. It’s the first clip I’ve seen that shows more than just a split second of a hopeful’s crazy-good vibrato — as well as much more of the intra-judge dynamic.

We’ve also got Mariah Carey’s boobs competing with Mariah Carey’s hair for Most Volumnious in her single shot. You can’t blame her; it’s hard out there when the other diva at the table is an even bigger wig collector than you. Check it out: READ FULL STORY

Steven Tyler rips new 'Idol' judges; Nicki Minaj calls him racist

A happy American Idol judging family? Dream on.

But according to former American Idol judge Steven Tyler, harmony should be the ideal. Want that peacefulness explained via a sort-of gross birth metaphor? Tyler’s got you covered:

“I know that they’ve got something going on on the judges’ panel, [and] it shouldn’t be that, it should be just the opposite: They should have something going on, which is called ‘camaraderie,’ ” he said in an interview with MTV. “They should have something going on so thick and beautiful that they can lay it over the new talent that’s trying to birth itself. It needs to be birthed, not judged by ‘entertainment’ factors, it needs to be judged by people that [are] honest, true, that have the ‘it’ factor. Not the ‘it’ factor because they can fight. The f— is that all about?”

The rocker goes on to say, “These kids…they’re scared to death; you’re not going to get the best [out of them]. … If it was Bob Dylan, Nicki Minaj would have had him sent to the cornfield! Whereas, if it was Bob Dylan with us, we would have brought the best of him out, as we did with Phillip Phillips. Just saying.” READ FULL STORY

Nicki Minaj vs. Mariah Carey vs. Barbara Walters? The 'Idol' feud continues

Just call it Minaj’s Revenge.

Barbara Walters recently interviewed new American Idol judge Mariah Carey, and on The View this morning, relayed what Carey told her. Carey, via Walters, charged that multiple people heard fellow judge Nicki Minaj say, “If I had a gun, I would shoot the b***h,” as part of Minaj’s expletive-filled remarks against Carey that leaked online earlier this week.

Not surprisingly, Minaj sees things differently, and took to her Twitter this afternoon to clear a few things up. We’ve posted some highlights below, but you should really read the whole thing in its entirety.

First, Minaj declared, “The struggle to be a victim is real in these streets. Lmaooooooooooo” and “The struggle to not have the kid on the show is real in these streets. Lmaooooooooo.” READ FULL STORY

Ryan Seacrest on Nicki Minaj/Mariah Carey fight: It 'went a little too far'

Wondering what really happened on the set of American Idol in Charlotte yesterday, when Nicki Minaj apparently cursed out fellow new judge Mariah Carey? Ryan Seacrest to the rescue!

As the reality competition’s host revealed during On Air With Ryan Seacrest this morning, there was “a very heated, intense argument towards the end of the day after a contestant did a little bit of a performance in the room.” Though Seacrest was not present when the dispute broke out, he admitted that both Minaj and Carey “went a little far” during their argument: “And, so, yeah, it was heated. It did go too far, to the point where the producers said with just a few more contestants left, ‘Let’s call it a day.’ And, [they] called a ‘wrap’.”

'Idol' fight: Nicki Minaj curses out Mariah Carey

The American Idol auditions were disrupted Tuesday after two new judges on the show engaged in a contentious fight on the panel.

In a video obtained by TMZ (below), rapper Nicki Minaj curses out pop singer Mariah Carey at a stop in Charlotte, N.C. The audio makes the conversation difficult to understand, but according to one translation, Minaj shouts, “I told them, I’m not f–kin’ putting up with her f–kin’ highness over there.”

The site claims the fight was over a contestant’s performance and that Minaj threatened to “knock out” Carey, but that’s not confirmed. Another site claims Carey started the fight by “making jabs” at Minaj. Arguably, the best part is fellow newcomer judge Keith Urban looking rather trapped sitting between them.

Source: Nicki Minaj is in deep talks to join 'American Idol'

After a couple of canceled performances and a new Us Weekly report, speculation that Nicki Minaj will help to judge American Idol‘s 12th season is at a fever pitch. And while nothing is final yet, sources have told EW that the Pink Friday rapper is in deep talks to join Fox’s reality juggernaut — though, again, no deal has been made.

Pop diva Mariah Carey signed on to become an Idol judge this summer, shortly after Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and multihyphenate Jennifer Lopez left the show. Singer Nick Jonas revealed a few weeks ago that he is also “being considered” for a seat on the panel. (Sorry, Snoop.)
