'The Mindy Project': Morgan's got game, sort of, in new webisodes -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Even though the show’s called The Mindy Project, audiences and critics agree that its breakout character is Morgan Tookers (Ike Barinholtz): a goofy nurse who just happens to be an ex-con. So it’s no surprise that Morgan stars in a set of new Mindy Project webisodes — called, appropriately enough, “The Morgan Project.”

According to Barinholtz himself, though, Morgan’s popularity wasn’t the only factor in getting these online-only clips made. “I gave the writer’s assistants gift certificates to Tony Roma’s, and they were kind enough to make Morgan the focus of the webisodes (a small episode of television that airs on the world wide web),” he tells EW. “They focus on Morgan’s ‘game,’ which is poor to very poor.”

Case in point: In this first clip, Mindy (Mindy Kaling) finds herself roped into evaluating Morgan’s kissing skills when he asks her for dating advice. “To loosen up the mood before the kiss we made the entire crew kiss,” Barinholtz says. “We’re looking at a pretty big lawsuit.”

PaleyFest 2013: The top 5 nuggets from the cast of 'The Mindy Project'

Fans of The Mindy Project were treated to a lively Q&A with some of the core members of the cast and producing staff, and a chance to see “Mindy’s Birthday” (airing March 19), Friday in Los Angeles at the PaleyFest.

Fresh off the news that The Mindy Project would be returning to Fox for a second season, the cast seemed grateful and at ease, and spent the majority of the panel doing their Chris Messina impressions. Show creator Mindy Kaling was sweet, gracious and self-deprecating, and admitted that she loves to look at Messina and that she was excited to play a character with style and a disposable income.

The real star of the panel, though, was Ike Barinholtz, who writes for the show and plays male nurse Morgan Tookers. Funny, charming, and larger than life, he always had a joke or a lively anecdote at the ready. (He also does a killer Alan Arkin impression.) The only time Barinholtz paused was when Kaling kissed him, after he teased her that maybe if he talked like Messina, she’d be interested in him.

Click past the jump for five fun things we learned at the PaleyFest panel.

Good thing Chloe Sevigny tested her comedic chops on Portlandia this winter — EW has confirmed that in April, she’ll be joining The Mindy Project for a multi-episode arc.

As TVLine first reported, Sevigny will play Christina — an experienced war photographer who also happens to be the ex-wife of Danny, Chris Messina’s grumpy but sensitive doctor. The Big Love star will be on hand for at least three episodes of Fox’s comedy, which was recently picked up for a second season.

B.J. Novak on his 'Mindy Project' arc, being BFF with Mindy Kaling, and returning to 'The Office'

Everyone knows that Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard belong together — even if their story seemingly ended when Kelly left Scranton to be with handsome doctor Ravi at the beginning of The Office‘s ninth season.

So it’s a good thing that the actors behind Ryan and Kelly will get one more shot at happiness on The Mindy Project. B.J. Novak — an executive producer of the Fox comedy’s pilot, as well as a consulting producer throughout its first season — is guest-starring tonight and next Tuesday as Jaime, a Latin professor Novak calls “the man version of what [Mindy Kaling's character] dated on The Office.” There’s just one problem with the charismatic classicist: his unusually close friendship with Lucy (Eva Amurri Martino), which makes Mindy feel like “the side character in their romantic comedy.”

To any Mindy Kaling fans, this scenario should sound familiar — Novak and Kaling have enjoyed a close friendship (and an on-again off-again romance) since both were hired to work at The Office in 2004. Here’s what the multihyphenate had to say about exploring his relationship with Mindy for her new comedy — as well as his plans to return to Scranton for The Office‘s imminent series finale.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Was your arc on the show inspired by your friendship with Mindy?
B.J. NOVAK: I don’t know that it’s a direct analogy, but it’s definitely inspired by our relationship. We are pretty inseparable best friends with a lot of chemistry ourselves, and we’re not dating. Whenever we date anyone else, I think there’s a period where the person is very skeptical of our friendship — “Everyone seems to think you two might be a couple, and I don’t mean to get in the way. Are you sure you’re not dating? Are you sure you’re not going to end up dating?” It’s such a common thing to have that platonic best friend that becomes a little weird when you start dating someone.

'The Mindy Project' nabs Seth Rogen to play...

Seth Rogen is taking a break from his Guilt Trip for a trip down memory lane on The Mindy Project.

Fox has announced that the actor, who currently stars alongside Barbra Streisand in The Guilt Trip, will guest on the Feb. 19 episode of the freshman comedy as Sam, a man who once had a teen romance with Mindy. (He was her first kiss!)

In the episode, titled “The One That Got Away,” Mindy finds herself reunited with Sam, and after reminiscing about their time at Jewish summer camp, they begin to rekindle their puppy love.

Rogen is arguably one of the biggest-name guest stars to visit The Mindy Project, which last month also booked Office alum B.J. Novak for a guest stint.

Mindy returns tonight with new episodes.

B.J. Novak will guest-star on 'The Mindy Project'

Kelly Kapoor and Ryan Howard are back together for one more round.

B.J. Novak will guest-star on two episodes of The Mindy Project later this year as Jamie, a “charming Latin professor who bonds with Mindy over their love of a dead language,” EW has confirmed. The news was first reported by Vulture.

Mindy Kaling and Novak starred on and wrote episodes of The Office together for eight years. Novak is also already a consulting producer on Fox’s The Mindy Project, which is executive produced by Kaling.

This news means that a full three-quarters of the “Male Prima Donna” crew will appear on Mindy Project. Perhaps after The Office ends this spring, Ellie Kemper can join in on the fun.

Mindy Kaling returning to 'The Office'

Mindy Kaling is returning to The Office — albeit briefly

The actress says she’s going to have an opportunity to say goodbye to Kelly Kapoor on the NBC comedy this fall.

Kaling, of course, is starring in her own new comedy, The Mindy Project, on Fox this fall. But she told reporters at the Television Critics Association’s semi-annual press tour Monday that she believes she’ll appear in at least one episode of her old show. “I think I’m going to be in the premiere and maybe another episode,” she says. “That was big. I got attached to that character. It’s fun to see what’s going to happen to Kelly.”

Kaling also made a distinction between her Mindy Project character and Kapoor. “The Office in so many ways is about disguising your reactions because its a mock documentary,” she said. “In some ways, this [show] is a reaction to that.”

The actress revealed that Office co-creator Greg Daniels will direct an episode of Mindy Project during its first season. READ FULL STORY »
