Ausiello: Actually, I just conducted a straw poll in Smurf Village and turns out what the Smurfs really wanted was me, not NPH. All kidding aside, I really did conduct a poll. And I won. By a landslide. Seriously. Moving on… here’s your big scoop: My magazine column is movin’ on up to the News & Notes section beginning with this week’s issue (on sale Friday). This just in: 'My Name is Earl' will NOT live on

My-name-is-earl_l Talk about lousy karma.

Despite reports that TBS was on the verge of rescuing My Name is Earl from NBC’s scrap heap, a spokesperson for Twentieth Century Fox Television confirms that the Emmy-winning comedy is officially dead.

In a statement, the studio rep said, “While we had hoped to find a way to produce additional episodes for TBS, in the final analysis we simply could not make the economics work without seriously undermining the artistic integrity of the series. As none of us, [series creator] Greg [Garcia] included, want the show to go out on anything but a high note, we regret that we must put to rest any speculation that Earl will continue. We are grateful to everyone at TBS for their enthusiasm for the series and wish to offer our heartfelt thanks to the cast and crew of My Name is Earl for their incredible work.”

Breaking: 'Earl, 'Unit' axed, 'Medium' moving to CBS

It’s been a busy morning. Let’s get to the headlines:

* NBC has pulled the plug on My Name is Earl. The show’s sidekick, Ethan Suplee, confirmed the news via Twitter. "Just got the call
that My Name Is Earl has been canceled," he wrote. "They sure did take their time
with that decision — or rather informing us of it." An Earl insider says execs at 20th Century (the show’s producer) are in discussions with Fox and ABC about picking up the four-year-old comedy.

* NBC has passed on ordering another season of Medium. However, CBS, which owns the show, is expected to pick it up and pair it on Fridays with Ghost Whisperer. 

* CBS is disbanding The Unit after four seasons. No talk of another network rescuing it.
