'Once Upon' scoop: 'Downton Abbey' actress cooks up mystery role

Downton Abbey‘s cook is dropping into fairy tale land.

Lesley Nicol has signed onto ABC’s Once Upon a Time for a mysterious upcoming role. “As a Huge #DowntonAbbey Fan I’m very excited @lesley_nicol is coming to #OnceUponATime!” tweeted Josh Dallas, who plays Prince Charming on the show (to which Lost showrunner Damon Lindelof replied, “It is unfair that England gets to see DOWNTON ABBEY before us because we beat them in a war”).

No details yet on Nicol’s character other than she’ll have a “special connection” to the Snow White family. Hmm.

Nicol, who plays Mrs. Patmore on the British hit, is expected to return to Downton for season four (but not, as you might have heard, Dan Stevens). And in case you missed it, here’s another Once Upon casting, this time involving a Walking Dead actor, that broke over the holiday.

A newcomer on AMC’s The Walking Dead is joining the cast of ABC’s Once Upon a Time.

Actress Sonequa Martin-Green is joining ABC’s fantasy hit in the mysterious new role of Tamara. The chracter is is described as a charming and likable woman who’s secretly highly ambitious and a fearless leader driven to get what she wants. Not a lot to go on, but that’s all the information we have right now (I know, rough sledding trying to figure what Tamara’s mythological identity might be from that). Tamara is expected to be a recurring character this season and possibly appear in the show’s third season as well.

Martin-Green’s Walking Dead character Sasha was introduced in the recent midseason finale of the series (part of a new group of survivors who just discovered the prison) and she’s expected to continue on the show when it returns from hiatus in February. Green has also had arcs on CBS’ The Good Wife and was on NYC-22.

Here’s the latest promo for the return of Once Upon, which teases what will happen now that fairy tale land characters can leave Storybrooke: READ FULL STORY »

Good news for fantasy fans, electricity haters, and Aaron Sorkin geeks: The Paley Center announced today that events featuring the cast and creators of ABC’s Once Upon a Time, NBC’s Revolution, and HBO’s The Newsroom will be held at next year’s PaleyFest.

The annual festival includes panels centered on current and beloved-but-canceled shows. This past year’s lineup shone a spotlight on Community, American Horror Story, The Vampire Diaries, and Castle, among others. Once Upon a Time‘s cast and creators also attended the fest in 2012.

Though a full lineup won’t be announced until Jan. 9, tickets for the fest are already available. Did somebody say best Christmas present ever?

Best of 2012 (Behind the Scenes): How Robert Carlyle created Rumpelstiltskin

Rumplestiltskin.jpg

Once Upon a Time‘s Rumpelstiltskin is arguably broadcast TV’s most extreme character, a devilish, vindictive, childish wizard who offers to fulfill desperate wishes “for a price.” Actor Robert Carlyle (Trainspotting, 28 Weeks Later) plays fairy tale land’s Rumple and his sober Storybrooke alter ego Mr. Gold, and put plenty of thought into the creation of both characters. Here, in a piece originally published as the show began its second season, he shares his process. For more stories behind this year’s top TV and movie moments, click here for EW.com’s Best of 2012: Behind the Scenes coverage.

Origins: “I knew Rumpelstiltskin’s name but I didn’t know anything else about him,” Carlyle says. “Everyone thinks they know Rumpelstiltskin but they don’t really. The lines I was given to perform seemed to be begging to be taken as far from normality as possible. I thought, ‘The braver the [performance] better.’”

The voice: “There’s no way I could speak in my normal voice while looking so extraordinary and while having this bizarre stuff to say,” the actor reasoned. “I tried many different types of voices and the thing that I landed on was completely by chance, really, thanks to my son. He was wandering though the house making these high-pitched voices and sounds I thought, ‘Rumpelstiltskin has a child-like quality to him, he kind of enjoys gleefully tricking people.’” READ FULL STORY »

'Once Upon a Time' actor Raphael Sbarge on 'Star Wars' in Storybrooke and 'dramatic' events to come

once-raphael-sbarge.jpg

EW readers might be hoping to see Yoda pop up on Once Upon a Time, but actor Raphael Sbarge, who plays Storybrooke’s resident psychologist Archie, has his own hopes.

“When Disney bought Star Wars, my first thought was, ‘When’s C-3PO coming on?!’” he tells EW.

But his own personal wish list aside, Sbarge says he’s on the fence about whether or not George Lucas’ iconic characters should ever cross paths with Storybrooke — but if they ever do, it would stay true to the Once universe.

“It’s above my pay grade, but I would imagine there’s a fine line for [the writers] to walk. Part of what makes this show work is even though they have broken the rules in one sense, they have a lot of structure to what it is they’ve laid out,” he says.

CHANDRA WILSON ON BAILEY’S FUTURE … AND GREY’S ANATOMY

If you read my chat with Grey’s Anatomy‘s Chandra Wilson last week, then you know that Bailey will spend the next episodes “kicking and screaming” her way to the altar. But one thing Wilson thinks might help Bailey get into the groove a bit more? If Ben put a ring on it!

“My finger is light, that’s all I’m saying. It’s very, very light,” she says, laughing. “And he used to be an anesthesiologist. You’d think there would be some sort of bling involved. But her finger is rather light — at least for 2012. So we’ll see what happens going forward.” But regardless of Bailey’s left hand gets a little heavier, Wilson says Bailey is committed. “She’s going to see [it] through,” she says. “You can’t tell somebody you’re going to marry them and then play around.”

And while Bailey and Ben could have many happy years ahead of them, as always, questions are starting to arise about Grey‘s future. Now midway though its ninth season, Wilson says she is anything but tired. And while there won’t be official word about a tenth season for several months, she says she’s personally on board. “I think the consensus is that as long as our writers want to keep writing, we’re here to keep riding the ride,” she says. “As actors, we’re very cognizant of the opportunities we’ve been given. Sooner or later it will be the end.”

'Once Upon a Time': Meghan Ory on Ruby's high anxiety episode

Who’s afraid of the big bad wolf? Everyone in Storybrooke.

At least, that’s the case this week when a man turns up dead following the first post-curse full moon, leaving more than a few suspicions directed toward resident wolf-girl, Ruby. And as Meghan Ory teases, Ruby isn’t taking the pressure well. “The main thing that’s been on her mind is ‘What’s going to happen? Am I going to turn into a wolf?’” she says. “She’s been having some wolf senses come back, so this is the make or break point. She’s pretty stressed out.”

Luckily, she has a lot of people in her corner — from crossbow-wielding Granny to David, who Ory says has been a great support system for Ruby this season. “David is kind of a brother figure to her and I like how their relationship develops,” she says. “I think they’re always there for each other.” READ FULL STORY »

'Once Upon a Time': Can Capt. Hook be trusted? -- EXCLUSIVE

Team Enchanted currently has a lot standing between them and their return to the real world.

Luckily, Capt. Hook has the solution to their most immediate issue: Getting up the cursed beanstalk to fetch the magic compass. The problem? They’re not sure whether he can be trusted.

But as you can see from this exclusive clip from the next new episode Once Upon a Time, titled “Tallahassee,” they have little choice. And even after they get up there — which we can assume they will — they’ll have to contend with “strongest and most terrible” of all the giants (played by Jorge Garcia).

How will they overcome? Tune in Sunday for the full answer. Meanwhile, enjoy this sneak peek:

Poll: Which Star Wars character should visit 'Once Upon a Time'?

It’s stunning news: Disney has acquired Lucasfilm and will produce new Star Wars films. The cost: $4.05 billion (one can imagine George Lucas throwing on that extra .05 billion just for the hell of it). The move could goose interest in that live-action Star Wars TV series that Lucasfilm has sitting on the shelf (a full season of scripts were written, but the series was considered too expensive for any network). Or the purchase could further postpone a live-action series, since Disney will want to concentrate their firepower on making Episode VII, which is coming in 2015.

The acquisition does raise one potential TV cross-over possibility, though: Disney-owned ABC’s Once Upon a Time has been mining its parent company’s treasure trove of characters, and plans to continue expanding beyond fairy tales. Showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz are huge Star Wars buffs. Might a character, someday, somehow appear on the show? And which one? Presumably it would have to be a masked or non-human character to maintain continuity with the films, unless they wanted Mark Hamill playing a 60-year-old Luke… Here’s some options: READ FULL STORY »

'Once Upon' showrunners reveal which famous characters they'd consider adding

jack-sparrow-depp.jpg

Once Upon a Time is broadening its universe beyond fairy tales this season, adding a historical legend (Mulan) and literary creations (Capt. Hook, Lancelot). So who else might possibly show up in Storybrooke? We ran some Disney-owned and public domain characters past showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz to get the scoop…

Robin Hood? Kitsis: “Absolutely.” Horowitz: “Definitely in-bounds.”

Tarzan? Kitsis: “Never talked about Tarzan. But in a world where The Jungle Book exists, I don’t know why Tarzan couldn’t either.”

Mickey Mouse? Kitsis: “He’s been on the show — in phone form. I can’t ever see how he’d get on and feel real.”

Genghis Khan? Kitsis: “Probably not. Too historical.”

Capt. Jack Sparrow? Both: [Exasperated sighsREAD FULL STORY »

'Once Upon a Time' scripts full of cursing

once-cursing.jpg

Once Upon a Time is a family friendly 8 p.m. drama, but its scripts are a bit R-rated.

Showrunners Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz have continued a screenwriting tradition honed on their last ABC hit, Lost, where an extra ingredient is added to the story: Lots ‘o cursing — and we don’t mean of the Evil Queen-spell-casting variety.

Unlike on the ultra-serious sci-fi drama Lost, though, it’s far more funny to read f-bombs dropped in fairy tale land. When Lancelot was first revealed to Emma and Snow in last Sunday’s episode, for example, the script noted that “things appear f–ked” for our heroes when “a smile grows across Snow’s face” as she recognizes her old friend. And in the next moment, “we wonder how the f–k these two met…” The producers recall that one rousing piece of description explained an action taken by actor Josh Dallas this way: “Because he’s Prince f–king Charming.”

Even though the profanity isn’t in the dialogue, and therefore not in the show, there’s a pragmatic reason for its inclusion. READ FULL STORY »

'Once Upon' scoop: See Captain Hook meet Rumpelstiltskin

Want to see how Once Upon a Time introduces Captain Hook on Sunday?

Below is an exclusive non-spoilery video showing the first scene with Colin O’Donoghue’s character. Some setup: This is a fairy tale land flashback from before Rumpelstiltskin became The Dark One (and, for that matter, before Captain Hook really became Captain Hook). Right before this moment we learn Rumple can’t find his wife. Remember, she’s the one whose fate we received some conflicting information about last season. And did you see yesterday’s interview with Robert Carlyle about how he created the character of Rumple?

The clip from Sunday’s must-watch episode is below… READ FULL STORY »
