Executive producer previews 'Ravenswood': New characters, Caleb's family, and 'an adversary of some dark underworld'

The “A” team might wear black hoodies and send threatening notes, but the town of Ravenswood has darkness running through its veins.

Tomorrow, Pretty Little Liars spin-off Ravenswood debuts when PLL‘s Caleb finds himself in a new town where a curse connects him to four other individuals. But what’s the curse, and why were these five teens chosen? That’s what will be explored in the new series from the team that brought you Rosewood, “A,” and countless shocking revelations.

We talked with Ravenswood executive producer and co-creator Oliver Goldstick about what we can expect from the new series (hints: mystery, friendship, and Mrs. Grunwald):

'Ravenswood' First Look: Caleb goes for a walk in the cemetery

Just because Caleb (Tyler Blackburn) will soon be spending more time in Ravenswood than Rosewood doesn’t mean he’s given up his favorite hobbies — like hanging out in cemeteries!

Joining him on his stroll in the exclusive photo above (first seen in EW’s annual Fall TV preview issue) is Nicole Gale Anderson, who plays Miranda on the show, which is about a group of teens who discover they’re involved with an evil curse (aka: typical teen stuff). But for Blackburn, Caleb’s journey in the Pretty Little Liars spin-off, announced back in March, is about growing up more than anything. “Yes, he’s been helping the PLLs for a couple of years…but now this is very personal,” he says. “The stakes become a lot higher for him, and I really foresee him turning into a man now and having to really fend for himself and protect other people, too.”

As previously teased, with a curse looming over the town, Ravenswood will have a little more of a supernatural touch to it than Pretty Little Liars, and Blackburn couldn’t be happier. “I love supernatural stuff and this is like my favorite kind because it’s not horror or vampires or werewolves,” he says. “It’s definitely more spiritual and there’s a spiritual, eerie quality to it.”

Ravenswood premieres Oct. 22 on ABC Family. With a little more than a month to go, do you have any burning questions about the show or new characters?

'Ravenswood' news roundup: 'Beauty and the Beast' sis nabbed as series regular. Plus, an exclusive photo

It’s been a busy day in Ravenswood.

First up in today’s news downpour: The Pretty Little Liars spin-off has found its Miranda in Beauty and the Beast recurring player Nicole Gale Anderson, who plays the younger sister of Kristin Kreuk’s Catherine on that show. Miranda is described in a casting breakdown as a “fiercely independent foster kid” who “uses her wits to cover her emotional scars.” Anderson, who also appeared on ABC Family’s Make It or Break It, is set to be a regular on the buzzy project, which will also star Tyler Blackburn.

A Pretty Little Liars actor is moving over to star in the show’s spinoff.

Tyler Blackburn, who plays Caleb Rivers on the show, has been cast in ABC Family’s Ravenswood.

The new show will “center on a town, not far from Rosewood, PA (the home base of Pretty Little Liars), which has suffered under a deadly curse for generations. Five strangers suddenly find themselves connected by this fatal curse and need to dig into the town’s mysterious and terrible history before it’s too late for each of them.”

Ravenswood will premiere on following the annual Pretty Little Liars Halloween episode, while season 4 of Pretty Little Liars premieres June 11.
