Fox officially announces creation of 24-hour sports network, Fox Sports 1

Style: "BBS_BONES_MASTER_CURVE"The Fox Sports Media Group officially announced at its upfront presentation today that it’s launching a new national sports network called Fox Sports 1. Like OWN before it, the new venture won’t require an entirely new channel; instead, Fox is transforming the existing Speed cable channel into FS1, which will allow the nascent net to be available in over 90 million homes.

FS1 debuts on Aug. 17 and features a schedule stocked with live events — including college basketball, college football, NASCAR, soccer, and UFC — as well as Fox Sports Live news coverage and original programs such as Rush Hour, a panel show hosted by Regis Philbin, and Fox Football Daily, an extension of Fox’s NFL Sunday pregame show hosted by personalities including Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long, Jay Glazer, Gus Johnson, Erin Andrews, and Mike Pereira.  READ FULL STORY »

He’s baaack!

Television legend Regis Philbin has been without a regular TV gig since leaving Live! With Regis and Kelly in 2011. But this summer, Reeg will return to the airwaves with a series on Fox Sports 1 — a new channel that will replace the Fox-owned Speed channel on cable.

Philbin’s new show — and Fox Sports 1′s very existence — won’t officially be announced until this afternoon. [Update: It's official!] Still, the advent of both is one of showbusiness’s worst-kept secrets; after some prodding from Barbara Walters, Philbin spilled the beans about his upcoming project on The View yesterday. “Yes, I think I will be doing another show,” the host said vaguely before giving a few specifics: “Fox is starting a sports channel. Everybody is starting a sports channel now, you know? Nothing but 24 hours of sports … Regis is going to have a show on that.” READ FULL STORY »

Regis Philbin will step in for Hoda Kotb as fourth-hour co-host of the Today show this week, Kathie Lee Gifford announced this morning. Wednesday (or “Winesday,” as Gifford and Kotb call it) will mark the first time the iconic duo has co-hosted since Gifford vacated her spot on Live! With Regis and Kathie Lee in 2000. Said Gifford, “We’re just going to let him show up and let the sparks fly. Should be fun!”

Who will fill Regis Philbin’s seat on ABC’s Live! with Regis & Kelly?

Here are 10 names making the industry rounds as potential pairings for Kelly Ripa. Some of these celebrities been previously reported and others are new. At least a couple, we’re told, are non-starters. ABC, unfortunately, has no comment. Here’s what we think:

Ryan Seacrest: You can’t have a major talk show vacancy without his name coming up. He could clearly handle the job. The trick (as is the case with several names below) is working around his existing deals.

Jeff Probst: The Survivor host is a superb interviewer, he has co-hosted the show in the past, and his contract is up this year.

Mario Lopez: Another former Live! co-host. We’re told he’s potentially a popular contender, but that his deal with Extra may hold things up.

Chris Harrison: The Bachelor host is already in the ABC family. If he can handle crazed bachelorettes, surely he can work with sweet Kelly, right? READ FULL STORY »
