'The Secret Life of the American Teenager': Creator Brenda Hampton reflects on five wonderful seasons

After four seasons of drama, ABC Family’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager launches its final season tonight at 8 p.m. ET. What began as the story of high-schooler Amy Juergens (Shailene Woodley) becoming pregnant by Ricky Underwood (Daren Kagasoff) tonight finds Amy buying a wedding dress and — yes — a guest appearance by Chaz Bono as himself. At this momentous point in the show’s history, creator Brenda Hampton takes a little time to reflect on the highs and highers of working on the drama through the years and reveals a handful of “secrets” behind the production.

We had such a good time doing Secret Life, we hated to see production come to an end last fall. We were hoping to keep going until the baby grew up and graduated from college. We put together a wonderful cast and crew; it was a really great group of people, and we shot at the Warner’s Bros. Ranch, best lot in town. When Steve Schirripa (Leo) left the set for the last time, in thanking everyone, he repeatedly said it was the “best job I ever had in my life.” That made me feel really good because I strive to create an environment where everyone can enjoy the work and do their best, knowing that that’s really an impossible goal. I can get a show done on time and under budget; that’s always possible when you work with Lin Parsons (our line producer/unit production manager/director), but making a production a good experience where everyone still has time for a life… that’s a rare experience in Hollywood. And this was one of those rare experiences. I owe most of the credit to Lin and to Bill Asman (our jovial director of photography). I loved going to work every day, and though the job presented a lot of challenges, I’d have to say that The Secret Life of the American Teenager was also the best job of my life. READ FULL STORY

'Pretty Little Liars': Shay Mitchell shows love to her 'Mitchies' fan army -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

Mitchies_510x317.jpg

What’s a “Mitchie”? Apparently, that’s what fans of Pretty Little Liars star Shay Mitchell are called, a fact we discovered at our cover shoot for the ABC Family teen drama. EW posed the show’s four stars with several questions, including: “What has been your craziest fan encounter?” Mitchell’s three co-stars — Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, and Troian Bellisario — almost immediately turned to her. “People get your face tattooed on them!” exclaimed Hale, before the foursome went on to explain what the “Mitchies” are.

Mitchell herself offered this: “There’s no face! But I’ve met a few fans from across the world who’ve had my name tattooed on them.” Then the whole Q&A basically devolves into a further lovefest for Mitchell and her insane fans. 'Pretty Little Liars': Is Mona planning to target Emily next? -- EXCLUSIVE VIDEO

PLL-Clip

The answer to that question is yes, if you consider the clip below. EW has snatched about a minute from Tuesday’s forthcoming hour of ABC Family’s soapy teen mystery Pretty Little Liars EW’s cover subject this week — that finds Spencer (Troian Bellisario) forcefully warning Emily (Shay Mitchell) that she may be the next one to feel Mona and the “A” team’s wrath.

Holding an ominous funeral sash, Spencer — who has recently been getting it from Mona and the “A” team — points out that the only two letters in the words “deepest sympathy” that aren’t shiny are the E and the M. As in the first two letters of Emily. Remember: We saw one of the “A” minions laying the sash across flowers in the show-ending tag at the end of this week’s episode. “Mona is trying to tell us in her cryptic way,” Spencer warns, “that she’s targeting you next.” Emily brushes it off, but Spencer won’t give up. “She made it seem like something bad was going to happen to you tonight. Look, I’m gonna stay with you for the rest of the day. Do not ignore this!”

Should Emily ignore the supposed warning? Watch the clip and you decide. (And click here to buy this week’s PLL issue!)

–Mona is back! You probably knew that, and you probably even saw our exclusive sneak peek at tonight’s season premiere over on our Facebook page (Like it for access to the clip if you haven’t!), but is Mona good… or still bad? “What does Mona’s return mean for Rosewood and the girls?” Whether she’ll still be secretly (or not so secretly?) terrorizing Aria (Lucy Hale), Hanna (Ashley Benson), Emily (Shay Mitchell), and Spencer (Troian Bellisario) remains to be seen, but executive producer Marlene King says her motives are still dark. “She’s a villain out walking amongst the PLLs,” she says. Adds executive producer Oliver Goldstick: “She’s not coming back as Polly Purebread.”
