'True Blood' returns with less bite

True-Blood-601.jpg

HBO’s True Blood returned with less bite in the ratings this summer, though competition from the NBA Finals might have been to blame.

The sixth season of the vampire drama debuted to 4.5 million viewers Sunday evening, down 13 percent from last year. But last summer the show wasn’t against ABC’s coverage of the basketball championships.

The premiere number is on par with the third season premiere of HBO’s Game of Thrones, a show that’s frequently stacked against True Blood in ratings comparisons (Blood‘s first telecast Sunday was slightly higher than the first airing of Thrones in April, yet its full Sunday night tally, including a repeat, was lower than the fantasy drama). Thrones recently edged out TB to have HBO’s second most-watched drama season ever behind The Sopranos.

Lauren Bowles previews 'True Blood' season 6: The bloodiest season yet and the major death that made everyone cry

After a finale full of vampire scripture, fairy safe havens, and pack-master wars, True Blood season six picks up right where we left off — with a very bloody Bill (Billith?), a very scared Sookie, and the beginnings of a war. And one thing is for certain: With Warlow on the hunt for Sookie and all humans on the hunt for vampires, things don’t appear to be slowing down … at all.

We caught up with Lauren Bowles, who plays Holly, to chat about what we can expect from season six, including a major character death: READ FULL STORY »

HBO has released a full-length trailer for the new season of True Blood premiering June 16. New 'True Blood' season 6 teaser: War rages, blood will spill -- VIDEO

Last season, True Blood fans saw the beginnings of a war between vampires and humans when the council decided to blow up True Blood factories in an attempt to end mainstreaming. And with the newest teaser for season 6, it doesn’t look like anyone is going to back down from a fight.

“Do you have any idea how many people want to see us all dead?” Bill can be heard shouting from what can only be the helm of the supernatural ship. He is, after all, Vampire God now. But who will be brave enough to rise up against the blood-covered deity? The beautifully dumb Jason Stackhouse, who is more-than-likely dressed in his all-black war-time attire, keeps things simple in his leadership of Team Human — “It’s us against them.” READ FULL STORY »

Joe Manganiello teases new season of 'True Blood' (and forthcoming fitness book with a foreward by Schwarzenegger)

Last week, Joe Manganiello was in New York City promoting Magnum Gold (?!) ice cream with the premiere of the Magnum-sponsored short film As Good As Gold at the Tribeca Film Festival. (Yes, he jokes, the man behind Magic Mike‘s Big Dick Richie shilling Magnum is “synergy.” See a photo from when he popped by the EW offices below.) But don’t worry, the actor’s still in top form filming the new season of HBO’s True Blood, which premieres June 16.

New showrunner Brian Buckner starts season 6 with a bang, Manganiello says. “He’s letting loose a lot of the things that he’s wanted to do the past few years and maybe didn’t get around to doing.” Last we saw Alcide, he’d just become the new pack master. “He’s in charge of this unruly group of werewolves, and it’s not the best job in the world. I’ll just say that,” the actor adds. Actually, we got a bit more out of him: Alcide will have more sex, he confirms. “Whether or not there are Hong Kong wires, I don’t want to give any of that away,” he says, laughing. “But we definitely get into some territory that hasn’t been covered yet on True Blood. I thought I’d done it all, seen it all, but they somehow found a way to top last year.” READ FULL STORY »

Is it too early to start an Emmy campaign? Carrie Preston reprised her role as the brilliant and funny Elsbeth Tascioni on last night’s The Good Wife. But Preston’s stint on the show doesn’t end there: Elsbeth returns in the March 3 episode where she continues to represent Eli Gold (Alan Cumming) in his case against the Department of Justice. Best & Worst of 2012: 10 great and 5 not-so-great episodes

EW takes you through the 10 best and 5 worst television episodes of 2012. See them all below!

The Best

1. Game of Thrones, ”Blackwater” — May 27, HBO
Season 2′s climactic Battle of the Blackwater wins because HBO allowed producers
the time and cash to stage a massive land-and-sea confrontation. Thus, this was an episode of rousing heroism, chilling cowardice, gory action, and one giant green explosion that went ”FOOOOOM!” The most ingenious part? It made us care about the warriors on both sides. Staging that battle in viewers’ hearts was the episode’s most successful wartime victory of all. –James Hibberd

'Banshee': Watch the teaser trailer for 'True Blood' creator's new series

Cinemax has just released a teaser trailer for True Blood creator Alan Ball’s new series and — spoiler alert — there’s sex!

Banshee, premiering next year, is about an ex-convict and current thief (Antony Starr) who assumes the identity of the sheriff of Banshee, Pa., where only more troubles follow him. And from the first peek, it seems pleasantly Ball-ish (action + sex + more action + more sex).

The 10-episode series is set to premiere in the new year. Watch the teaser below! READ FULL STORY »

The 90-second scene picks up after Sookie sticks the gang in the elevator. UPDATE: Watch it below! READ FULL STORY »

'True Blood' finale preview: Bloody Eric with teary-eyed Sookie -- VIDEO AND PHOTOS

SUNDAY UPDATE: If you’ve now seen the season finale, share your thoughts here; Mandi Bierly’s full recap is in the works.

ORIGINAL POST: Sunday marks the end of True Blood‘s fifth season, and by the look of the photos and clip HBO has released, our long wait to see story lines converge will finally be over. One shot (below) shows Nora, Eric, and Tara at Sookie’s house. You know they mean business because they’re wearing leather jackets. Presumably, they want Sookie to go to Authority headquarters with them to stop Bill and save Pam and Jessica. That’s why the picture above of a blood-splattered Eric and Sookie at the Authority compound is worrisome. Note the single tear running down Sookie’s cheek. What might she have just seen Bill do? (A third photo we included below just because who doesn’t want to see Pam looking fierce even in jail?)

The clip, meanwhile, teases what happens when Bill is finally served his breakfast, Sam. Fun fact: In a PopWatch poll, 21 percent of readers were willing to let little Emma die if it meant Eric and Pam would be reunited in the finale. READ FULL STORY »
