'Twilight Saga' director to helm NBC's 'Hannibal'

Bryan Fuller’s Hannibal has found its director.

David Slade (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) has been hired to direct the first episode of NBC’s small-screen take on Thomas Harris’ notorious serial killer, plus he’ll serve as an executive producer on the pilot. The director also shot the pilot for NBC’s Awake this year, as well as the film 30 Days of Night.

Hannibal has been given a 13-episode direct-to-series order. Hugh Dancy stars as FBI profiler Will Graham (the title character has not yet been cast). While working a perplexing case of disappearing female college students, Graham enlists the help of Baltimore psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter — unaware that he’s actually a cannibalistic murderer.

The CW pilot Shelter, a drama from J.J. Abrams and One Tree Hill‘s Mark Schwahn set at an historic New England summer resort called Shelter Bay Inn, has added two more names to its growing cast. The network confirms that Malese Jow (pictured), who recurred on The Vampire Diaries as Anna, will play the resort’s resident party girl Morgan. Make It Or Break It‘s Zachary Abel will star as former local baseball hero Mitchell Taylor, who now works the concierge desk and is a hopeless romantic. Deadline first reported the castings.

Shelter Bay’s other employees include a newly appointed Type-A hotel manager named Grace (Elizabeth Henstridge). At least one of its guests is famous: Trent Ford, who’s also guested on The Vampire Diaries, will play a former British rock star staying in the penthouse.

THREE big names have just signed on for guest roles in Mindy Kaling’s promising Fox comedy pilot. In the as-yet-untitled show, Kaling plays a Bridget-Jones type OB/GYN trying to navigate her personal and professional life. Here’s the scoop:

First, Kaling’s The Office co-star Ed Helms is in the show as a potential love interest. He’ll play Dennis, a Wall Street analyst who goes on a blind date with Kaling’s character Mira.

Next, Saturday Night Live and Superbad veteran Bill Hader has joined the pilot to play Kaling’s ex-boyfriend Tom. He’s described as “upbeat, humble, almost infinitely appealing boy-next-door type who has such perfect chemistry with Kaling’s character that it feels nearly too good to be true. Mira sees him as the living breathing equivalent of an early 80’s Tom Hanks.” READ FULL STORY »

Law & Order: SVU costar Stephanie March has just landed a key role in a CBS drama pilot.

March, who plays ADA Alexandra Cabot on the long-running NBC crime drama, has landed the part of Natalie in CBS’ Baby Big Shot. The project is a legal drama about a working-class woman (Janet Montgomery) who uses her street smarts to compete with her more polished colleagues at top New York law firms. March’s character is “Spence-educated Manhattan royalty,” a high-ranking law firm associate who aspires to run the firm someday. Kyle MacLachlan also costars in the project.

March was an SVU series regular during seasons 2, 3, and 4 and went part-time in seasons 5, 6, 10, and 11, then returned this season in a semi-recurring role. If Baby Big Shot gets a series order, we’re told she could still potentially make appearances on SVU.

'Terra Nova' star joins high-profile CBS pilot

jason-omaraImage Credit: Bobby Bank/WireImage.comThe death knell has sounded even louder for Terra Nova, the freshman dino drama that’s busy hunting for a new home now that Fox canceled it. To wit: star Jason O’Mara just booked a co-leading role in CBS’ high-profile period drama about Las Vegas lawdog Ralph Lamb.

O’Mara will join Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis in the drama pilot from writers Nicholas Pileggi and Greg Walker, reports Deadline. Quaid will play Lamb while O’Mara will play his younger brother Frank. Chiklis gets to chuck the white hat for a change and play a Chicago mob fixer.

This is a second position booking for O’Mara, meaning if another outlet picks up Terra NovaNetflix maybe? — he won’t join the CBS project. But working alongside Quaid and Chiklis sounds a heckuva lot better than acting scared in front of faux prehistoric creatures. Just saying…

David Cronenberg to direct and produce his first TV series, 'Knifeman'

DAVID-CRONENBERG

David Cronenberg is set to direct and serve as executive producer on a new TV series, Knifeman. The show will be the first television project for Cronenberg, who’s directed A Dangerous Method, History of Violence, Eastern Promises, and The Fly, as well as the upcoming Cosmopolis (starring Robert Pattinson and Paul Giamatti).

The TV series, based on the novel by Wendy Moore, centers on an eccentric surgeon who engages in far-reaching methods in order to learn more about the human body. A rep for Media Rights Capital — the company producing the series — has confirmed that the project has not yet been sold; rather the current focus is on casting the pilot with the process starting over the next couple of months. A rep for Cronenberg could not be reached for comment.

The series is written by Emmy nominated writer and producer Rolin Jones (Friday Night Lights, Weeds, Smash) with the story by Jones and Ron Fitzgerald (also of Friday Night Lights).

The leading men (in contention) for fall 2012 are....

leading-men_510.jpg

This season, we had Eddie Cibrian (The Playboy Club), Jason O’Mara (Terra Nova), Hank Azaria (Free Agents), Kevin Dillon (How to Be a Gentleman), Mather Zickel (Man Up!), and Amaury Nolasco (Work It).

It didn’t work out too well for those guys, did it?

Fortunately, the failures of yesterday don’t seem to be quashing hopes for the (potential) successes of tomorrow. An excellent crop of new (and familiar) male stars are hoping to follow in the footsteps of Jim Caviezel (who’s truly nailed it on Person of Interest this season) and Henry Czerny (the very underappreciated male patriarch on Revenge) as the leading men of fall 2012. Not all of the men will make it through the final cuts this May, when the broadcast networks unveil their fall schedules to advertisers. But some certainly have a leg up over the others — partly due to the subject matter of their pilots (Dennis Quaid and Michael Chiklis, you’re a slam dunk) and partly due to their star power (Kevin Bacon, how can you NOT be preparing for your network TV debut?)

Here are some of the more recognizable actors in contention for your adoration (and eyeballs). Having trouble recognizing some of these projects? Check out our handy fall pilot wrap-up here. READ FULL STORY »
