Zooey Deschanel was awake early this morning — because others woke her up. Phone calls and texts from agents, friends, publicists, her manager, and her sister (Bones star Emily Deschanel) clogged the New Girl stars’ inbox after it was announced that she had snagged her very first Emmy nomination for her work on the Fox comedy. “I wanted to be an actress since I was 2-years-old,” Deschanel told EW. “It’s always been my dream and ambition. This is the kind of moment you dream about. Never in my wildest dreams would I have imagined that I could have this incredible honor and recognition. It’s just so exciting.”
And unexpected, she adds. “I have such a great job that’s just such an incredible gift, and I always want to be doing the work because I love the work and not for some other reason. [But] it just means so much to have this nomination.” READ FULL STORY »

With the fall TV schedule now complete (below), we get to step back and take a look at the hellish battleground that broadcast hath wrought. There’s some very tough-to-predict match-ups this fall:*
Tim Allen vs. Whitney Cummings (Fridays, 8-9): “No, my show’s lamer!” ABC and NBC have their low-expectations comedies airing on Fridays this fall, and they might run head-to-head depending on when NBC launches (ABC’s comedies premiere in November). NBC has Whitney and Community and ABC has Last Man Standing and new comedy Malibu Country. (Community fans, if your ass beat by Reba McEntire and Lily Tomlin, we have no words for you). At least 9 p.m. shows Shark Tank and Grimm will have half-way decent lead-ins for once. Our prediction: Edge goes to ABC.
Britney Spears vs. Christina Aguilera: OK, so one this is kind of a cheat. The Voice and X Factor won’t air on the same nights, let along in the same time period. But if you think their lack of head-to-head scheduling will matter to the media, you deserve to be hit, baby, one more time. Everybody will obsess over how these two compare. NBC’s The Voice has the wind at its back, averaging 6.2 in the adult demo this season compared to X Factor‘s 4.4. We all want to see how Spears handles the reality show spotlight, but many wonder if she can pull off being entertaining and analytical. Mark Burnett cast The Voice with big names who are charismatic and have the cojones to criticize a singer. Simon Cowell seems to like big names — who are just big names. From his penchant for chut-i-ney to his insistence on rockin’ a ‘mono on Friday evening, New Girl‘s breakout character Schmidt (Max Greenfield) has provided belly laughs week after week. It was established early on that Schmidt used to be a “fat kid with big dreams,” but viewers have only seen Schmidt’s hefty history in flashbacks and via a hilarious video Greenfield posted of “Fat Schmidt” singing Rihanna’s “We Found Love” back in November.
Happily, we’re about to see more. Starting March 6, a series of episodes will offer more glimpses of “Fat Schmidt,” and EW have pictures showing Greenfield’s step-by-step transformation into his big-boned, big-hearted avatar. Greenfield also spilled details on Schmidt’s long-awaited hook-up with man-eating model CeCe (Hannah Simone) and talked a possible Schmidt-spin-off. So are Schmidt and CeCe relationship material? To which musician might Greenfield pay homage next? And what other characters’ embarrassing pasts will be exposed in the next few episodes?
